Rheinhessen, Riesling, Familie Langguth, Sweet, 2014

Grape Type: Riesling
Sub-Type: Auslese
Harvest Year: 2014
Vinyard: NA
Region: Rheinhessen
Flavor classification: Fruchtig-Süß (sweet)
Quality classification: Deutscher Prädikatswein
Vintner or Bottler: F.W. Langguth Erben GmbH & Co. KG
D-56841 Traben-Trabach
Price: €5,99

Appraisal:

This wine is rated higher than Qualitätswein but since Erben is such a huge company the quality is a bit lower than a small producer even if this bottle has a quality level of Prädikatswein. It is good and drinkable. It is not too sweet, might be best chilled on a summer day spending the day biking up and down the Rhien river.

Color: Golden
Aroma: fruity, pear
Taste: light, fruity, apple
Style: crisp

My evaluation:

Nose(1-5):           4
Flavor(1-25):       18
Character(1-10):  7
Balance(1-5):       3
Length(1-5):        3

Rheinhessen, Riesling Spätlese, Familie Langguth Erben, Sweet, 2014

Grape Type: Riesling
Sub-Type: Spätlese
Harvest Year: 2014
Vinyard: Erben Spätlese
Region: Rheinhessen

Quality classification: Deutscher Qualitätswein
Vintner or Bottler: F.W. Langguth Erben GmbH & Co. KG
D-56841 Traben-Trarbach
Price: €3.99

Appraisal:

I tend to like late harvest wines, especially Rieslings. This one is drinkable but it is also a more basic wine, standard quality, standard flavor, nothing surprising or amazing. If you like a sweeter Riesling, you will like this wine.

Color: light golden
Aroma: Apple, Pear, fresh
Taste: sweet, fruity, a little lemony
Style: crisp

Flavor(1-25):      19

Pfalz, Riesling, Weinbau der Lebenshilfe, Halbtrocken, 2014

Here is a nice little Bio Wine from Pfalz.

Grape Type: Riesling
Sub-Type: NA
Harvest Year: 2014
Vinyard: 5 Wingert Riesling
Region: Pfalz
Flavor classification: Halbtrocken
Quality classification: Deutscher Qualitätswein Bio
Vintner or Bottler: Weinbau der Lebenshilfe e.V.
Sägmühle 15
D-67098 Bad Dürkheim
Price: €5,60 (Vanos)

Appraisal:

Here is a Bio Wine from Pfalz. It is Semi-dry, very drinkable, but probably very hard to find unless you visit the winery or know the right places, like Venos in Frankfurt. A special thing about this wine is that the hire Handicaped people and pick the grapes by hand to make an Ökological wine.

Color: Golden
Aroma: Oaky, green, a little skunky
Taste: apple, pear, grass
Style: Crisp

My evaluation:

Nose(1-5):            2
Flavor(1-25):        20
Character(1-10):   8
Balance(1-5):       4
Length(1-5):         3

This wine is not too sweet. It is sweeter at first then shows some tartness at the back of the mouth. Very interesting. Good with pasta or pastries.

Style: clean

My evaluation:

Nose(1-5):           3

Alsace, blend of four, Arthur Metz, Semi-Dry 2014

Here is one from Alsace. I was hoping for a good one but was more bang than buck.

Grape Type: Vin D'Alsace
Sub-Type: Muscat, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling
Harvest Year: 2014
Vinyard:Arthur Metz
Region: Alsace
Flavor classification: Fruity
Quality classification: AOP Alsace
Vintner: Alsace Prestige by Arthur Metz
Price: €4,99

Appraisal:

It does not have much nose, but the flavor attacks zour throat. I think there is too much blending going on here. I mean, four different grapes? If you can pull out different flavors that is great but the bite at the back of the throat is a little overpowering and the nose is almost not there. I have drank cheaper wines that were much better.

Color: Pale
Aroma: light apple
Taste: delicate tartness with a bite at the back of the throat
Style: Oak

My evaluation:

Nose(1-5):       2
Flavor(1-25):    17
Character(1-10): 4
Balance(1-5):    3
Length(1-5):     5
Total(Total+50): 81

Mosel Riesling, Thörnicher St. Michael, feinherb 2014

Here is a sweeter Mosel wine. I do prefer sweeter wines.

Rheingau, Riesling, Kloster Eberbach, Fruchtig 2014

Welcome to Kloster Eberbach. I might get my favorite one from the cellar to evaluate as well if there are enough requests.

Grape Type: Riesling
Sub-Type: Rauenthaler
Harvest Year: 2014
Vinyard: Kloster Eberbach
Region: Rheingau
Flavor classification: Fruchtig (Fruity, sweet)
Quality classification: VDP. Ortswein
Vintner: Hessische Staatsweingüter GmbH Kloster Eberbach
         D-65346 Eltville
Price: €9,59

Appraisal:

So far, I have liked most of the wines from Kloster Eberbach. It is a State winery of Hessen and they tend to make a quality product. This wine was no exception. Here the sweet fruit flavor compliments the lemon terrior properly. It has a sweet fruit flavor up front and a bite in the back of the throat. You can feel the warmth going all the way down to you stomach.

Color: light golden
Aroma: grassy,
Taste: fruit, light citrus
Style: fresh

My evaluation:

Nose(1-5):            4
Flavor(1-25):        21
Character(1-10):   8
Balance(1-5):       4
Length(1-5):         5

Rheingau, Riesling, G.H. von Mumm, Trocken 2014

Yet another Rheingau wine, this one also is too sour and bitter for my taste.

Grape Type: Riesling
Sub-Type: Classic
Harvest Year: 2014
Vinyard: NA
Region: Rheingau
Flavor classification: Trocken
Quality classification: VDP. Gutswein
Vintner: G.H. von Mumm'sches Weingut KG
         D-65366 Johannisberg/Rheingau
Price: €7,99

Appraisal:

Another wine that I can not drink. To sour and bitter for my taste. Might be good with asian food, Turkey, or fish. At least the flavor does not stay on the palette too long. I was expecting more from a VDP wine, at least the lemony flavor is more subtle than in the other that I tried previous to this one.

Color: Pale
Aroma: light and fruity
Taste: tart, bitter
Style: supposed to be classic

My evaluation:

Nose(1-5):        3
Flavor(1-25):     12
Character(1-10):  2
Balance(1-5):     3
Length(1-5):      4

Pfalz, Riesling, Peter Mertes KG Weinkellerei, Lieblich 2014

So, I am starting to 'officially' taste wines :)

Wine Name: Morio-Muskat
Harvest Year: 2014
Region: Pfalz, Deutschland
Flavor classification: Lieblich (sweet)
Quality classification: Deutscher Qualitätswein
Vintner: Peter Mertes KG Weinkellerei, D-54470 Bernkastel-Kues
Price: €2,19 on sale

Appraisal:

When I first opened this wine, I did not like it at all. It seemed too dry. The next day, after it aired some, it tasted much better. Sometimes, or more often, a wine needs to breath to reach the potential that it has inside. For this wine this was definitely the case. It was on sale so I thought it was just for drinking quickly but turned out to be rather drinkable.

Color: Pale
Aroma: Green, dry (smells a little like a Chardonay)
Taste: 1st day, too dry
           2nd day, much better!
Style: Crisp, Pear

My evaluation follows:

Nose(1-5):           3
Flavor(1-25):      19
Character(1-10): 5
Balance(1-5):      3
Length(1-5):       4
Total(Total+50): 84
